이 방법은 그 기원을 아리스토텔레스가 제자를 교육하는 방법에 두고 있다 (Olmscheid, 1999). 당시에 많은 교수자들은 읽기와 쓰기를 교육시키기 위하여 경험이 많고 나이가 많은 학습자를 선정하여 더 젊은 학습자를 훈련시키는 방법을 이용했다.
